J.S. Hittell was born December 25, 1825 in Jonestown, Lebanon County, Pa. His family moved to Hamilton, a town in Southwestern Ohio, in 1832. Hittell graduated from "Miami University" in 1843, and returned to Hamilton to practice law with the office of John Woods. In the spring of 1849, Hittell was in Ottawa, Illinois. Alexander Caulfield Anderson (1814-1884) was a clerk for the Hudson's Bay Company in 1832 at Fort Vancouver. He served the company in the New Caledonia district at Fort Nisqually and Colville, and at Fort Vancouver again in 1854. He retired to Cathlamet, but later moved to Vancouver Island.
