[Letters], May 1941-October 1942, Salisbury, Wiltshire, Eng., [to] Esther M. Thompson, Pittsburgh, Pa.

The correspondence begins with the arrival of the American Red Cross-Harvard Field Hospital Unit in England. Phillips describes the voyage across the Atlantic; the establishment of the hospital in Salisbury; her supervisory work at the hospital, in London and with "residential war nurseries"; frequent travel between Salisbury and London; an invitation to speak on myalgia at the Royal Society of Medicine ("It is the first time a nurse has ever been invited to read a paper"); and many personal details (runs in stockings, living arrangements, entertainment, etc.). The final piece of correspondence is dated 27 Oct. 1942. The collection also includes a 1930 photographic portrait of Phillips, a driver's license taken out in France in 1927, and several other pieces of ephemera.
