Samuel Pitkin account book, 1835-1840.

Samuel Pitkin operated an East Hartford, Connecticut, powder mill and recorded the mill's expenses in this account book. Pitkin has also included his family expenses, memos regarding mill employees, and notes concerning occurrences in town (land transactions, icy roads, etc.).

Samuel Leonard Pitkin, from East Hartford, CT, entered the American Literary, Scientific, and Military Academy (forerunner of Norwich University) in 1821 and graduated in 1823. Later he was involved in the dry goods business, the manufacture of gunpowder, and banking. Pitkin also served in the Connecticut State Militia from 1823-1838, rising to the rank of major general.
