Dictation recorded by Ivan Petrov, with an explanatory note. Reminiscences of Alexander Baranov, in whose house Chichinov lived at Sitka before going to California in 1818, followed by an account of life at Fort Ross; sea lion and sea otter hunting along the Pacific Coast; relations with the Spaniards; and Tarakanov's hunting party in 1814. Also describes later experiences at St. Paul's on Kodiak Island; the smallpox epidemic of 1836; salvage operations at Kenai Bay; eventful life at Sitka and on Kodiak.

Ezekial Thatcher was clerk of the Parkville School District, Shasta County, Calif. He emigrated to California from Pennsylvania in 1850 and helped establish the first school district in the Parkville area. He is descended from the Thatchers of Uffington, England, the same family as Denis Thatcher, husband of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. From the description of H.H.
