The land company which became known as the St. John's River Society (known also in Nova Scotia as the Canada Company, or the Quebec Company) was formed early in 1764 by a group of military officers stationed in Montreal. Anglican clergyman, who was probably born in New York City. He graduated from Yale in 1748. After ordination in London, 1749, Ogilvie returned to America with an appointment at Saint Peter's Church in Albany, New York as missionary to the Mohawk Indians. He also served as military chaplin, 1756-1760, primarily for British troops, under the command of General Sir William Johnson during the French and Indian War.
