Joint Christian Ministry in West Africa Records 1979-2002; 1984-1998

This series comprises records created or retained by persons responsible for coordinating ELCA Division for Global Mission (DGM) participation in the Joint Christian Ministry in West Africa (JCMWA). These records were generated during the course of documenting and monitoring the work of West African churches and overseas mission agencies to coordinate efforts to minister to the Fulbe people of West Africa through the JCMWA, also known as the Ministere Chretien Commun en Afrique Occidentale. Records are from 1979-2002 with the bulk dating from 1984-1998. Record types include assembly proceedings, meeting minutes, agenda, typewritten business correspondence, audits, budgets, financial reports, annual reports, trip reports, topical papers, and work agreements. This series comprises several accessions received into the ELCA Archives and as such includes records of program directors responsible for ELCA participation in JCMWA: the Rev. James L. Knutson, the Rev. Daniel W. Olson and the Rev. Benyam A. Kassahun. Subject matter includes periodic updates on JCMWA coordination efforts in various West African countries, literature publishing efforts, Fulfulde language cassette ministry, Fulfulde/Pulaar language workshops, and general business matters pertaining to DGM's involvement in the JCMWA. Most of the records comprise meeting minutes of the JCMWA standing committee, proceeding from JCMWA assemblies, updates on the financial situation of the JCMWA, and correspondence related to ministry efforts, staffing, and meeting arrangements. While this series includes records related to the JCMWA and its work, in many cases, there are gaps in the records. It appears that whatever was sent to DGM or retained by the program directors is what comprised the files. It cannot be ascertained if consistent efforts were made to fill in any gaps in the records.
