An account written from notes taken at the time of his passage across Nicaragua. Covers his arrival by steamship at mouth of San Juan River, passage up the river, via river boat, from Greytown to San Carlos on Lake Nicaragua, then overland to San Juan del Sur on the Pacific, with descriptions of river life and towns visited; observations on natives; brief histories of some of the cities; an account of the capture and occupation of Fort San Juan by the English in 1780; and a history of proposed canal projects. It includes a preface written April 15, 1868 in San Francisco; an introduction dealing with the discovery and early settlement of Nicaragua, its geography, its relation to the U.S., etc.; a table of contents; an appendix containing table of distances between San Francisco and New York via Nicaragua; and an index.

Daniel Cleveland came to San Diego on the steamship Orizaba in May 1869. He was an attorney for the Texas & Pacific Railway and was one of the founders of the Bank of San Diego in 1870. Ezekial Thatcher was clerk of the Parkville School District, Shasta County, Calif. He emigrated to California from Pennsylvania in 1850 and helped establish the first school district in the Parkville area. He is descended from the Thatchers of Uffington, England, the same family as Denis Thatcher, husband of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. From the description of H.H.
