Settlement of Port Townsend : Port Townsend, Washington : ms., 1878.

An interview with H.H. Bancroft, with comments by T.M. Hammond, present at the interview. Describes overland journey to Oregon, 1847; the Barlow Road; Portland and Oregon City; and conditions in the Willamette Valley. After visiting California in 1849, he settled at Port Townsend in 1852; describes its early years, the effect of the Fraser River gold rush, and custom house troubles.

Ezekial Thatcher was clerk of the Parkville School District, Shasta County, Calif. He emigrated to California from Pennsylvania in 1850 and helped establish the first school district in the Parkville area. He is descended from the Thatchers of Uffington, England, the same family as Denis Thatcher, husband of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. From the description of H.H.
