Pfohl worked as a bookkeeper for the textile manufacturing firm of F. & H. Fries, Salem, N.C. He also lived in the household of Francis Fries. The F. & H. Fries firm manufactured jeans for Confederate uniforms during the Civil War, and C. T. Pfohl was exempt from active military duty because of the essential nature of his work.
