The Chapel Hill Iron Mountain Company was incorporated in 1879 and organized in 1880 to mine iron ore found about one mile north of the University of North Carolina. At the time of the company's organization, there were five stockholders: William J. Askew, Preston L. Bridgers, R.R. Bridgers, Robert F. Hoke, and William S. Primrose. Robert Frederick Hoke (1837-1912) of Lincolnton, N.C., served in the Confederate Army, attaining a rank of major general. After the war, Hoke was engaged in various business enterprises, including gold and iron mining, insurance, and railroads. He served as director of the North Carolina Railroad Company for many years.
