James Brown was a landscape, marine, genre, and portrait painter. He was born in New York State around 1820 and worked as an artist in New York City at least from 1844-1855, exhibiting at the American Art-Union and the National Academy of Design. In 1859, Brown was in St. Louis working as a photographer. Two of Brown's paintings are known to have appeared in print, and at least two of his pictures were made into lithographs that were used as book illustrations. From the description o...
