William Draper Lewis was born in Philadelphia in 1867. In 1891 he received both a law degree and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Pennsylvania. He lectured in economics at Haverford College from 1890 to 1896, while also assuming the role of instructor in legal history at the Wharton School in 1891.
