The Institute of Musical Art (IMA) was founded by Frank Damrosch and James Loeb in 1905. The Board of Trustees along with the Director managed the affairs of the Institute. Upon the affiliation of the IMA with the Juilliard Graduate School in 1926, the Trustees' authority was superceded by that of the Board of Directors of the newly-created Juilliard School of Music. Until 1946, the Juilliard School of Music was composed of two divisions, the Juilliard Graduate School (JGS) and the Institute of Musical Art (IMA), which served as the undergraduate division. The IMA was founded in 1905 by Frank Damrosch and James Loeb; in 1926 it affiliated with the JGS, established in 1924 by the Juilliard Musical Foundation.
