James Townsend store ledger, 1830-1832.

The collection consists of the store ledger kept by James Townsend. The first five pages are pasted over with newspaper clippings. The remaining pages list the names of Townsend's customers and the items they purchased such as tea, sugar, coffee, soap, nails and tobacco.

James Townsend helped establish the town of Putnamville, Indiana. He also opened the town's first store and inn in 1830. The town's Presbyterian church was organized at the home of Mr. Townsend and his wife the same year. By 1850, Townsend had moved his family to a farm in Clay County, Indiana.
