Letters, 1853-1854.

The volume contains copies of 18 letters from Candler to his wife Maria in England, 1853-1854, while he was on an anti-slavery tour of the U.S., including Indiana. He describes his meetings with state governors and their reception of his petition; the support he received from Quaker groups; and the hostility of some supporters of slavery. Also included are notes on the various modes of transportation he employed.
