Clippings, 1862.

The collection consists of one folder of typed transcripts of clippings from newspapers in Indianapolis, Ind. and Urbana, Ohio, detailing talks given by Dr. Fletcher in those cities in 1862 about his experiences as a prisoner of war. In these talks he also observed the conditions and morale in the Confederacy.

Fletcher, William B., 1837-1907

William Fletcher was the son of Indianapolis banker Calvin Fletcher and was trained as a physician. During the Civil War he served with the 6th and 10th Indiana Volunteers, was captured in 1861 while serving as a scout, and was held at Libby Prison for seven months. He returned to Indianapolis and practiced as a physician with Theophilus Parvin. In 1868 he helped to found the Indiana Medical College, and acted as superintendent for the Indiana State Hospital for the Insane from 1883-1888. ...
