Collections include the journal (1710-1719) of John Fontaine (1693-1767) and letters of the Fontaine-Maury family. Journal mentions military service and travels through Europe (1710-1713), an attempted trip to Virginia, a 1715 trip to Virginia where Fontaine traveled to Germana, Ft. Christanna and on Governor Alexander Spotswood's Trans-Montane Expedition. He also journeyed to New York City, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland. The journal was copied by Ann Maury in 1840 and includes letters re family matters and Virginia from Reverend Peter Fontaine (1691-1757), Mary A. Fontaine Maury (1690-1755), Peter Fontaine (b. 1721) and Reverend James Maury (1718-1769) to relatives in England. Also includes a few 18th and 19th century family letters. Persons mentioned in the journal and letters include Mr. Baylor, Mr. Beverley, Mr. Clayton, Philip Ludwell, Austin Moor, Andrew Freneau, Colonel Morris, William Fontaine Alexander, Edmund Fontaine, Matthew Maury, and William A. James Maury (1718-1769) was the son of Matthew Maury and Many Anne Fontaine. He attended William and Mary and in 1742 was appointed usher of the grammar school. He was ordained as a minister in England a year later. Maury preached in King William county and later, in Fredericksburg Parish in Louisa County, Va. William Alexander studied under Julius Caesar Ibbetson. He served as the "draughtsman" for the Macartney Expedition to China, 1792-1794, sailing in the Hindostan, and making a vast number of sketches.
