Diary, 1862-1863.

Diary of Corporal James Miller of North Brookfield, Mass., kept from 22 Sept. 1862 - 7 Aug. 1863 while serving with the Mass. 42nd Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. The diary covers the entire term of service of the regiment, from training at Readville, Mass., transport to New York temporarily and then to its post in Louisiana, and return in Aug. of 1863. The regiment did not participate in any engagements during its service; however, Miller's diary describes camp life, drilling, and guard duties at its posts in Bayou Gentilly and briefly in New Orleans and at Opelousas Railroad, La. The diary also notes visits to New Orleans.
