Diary of medical student, physician, and educator George C. Shattuck Jr. of Boston, Mass. Entries from 1 Dec. 1834 to 17 May 1835 describe a journey to New York City, Philadelphia (Penn.), Baltimore (Md.), Washington (D.C.), the Southern States, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and back home. Entries written in Boston describe family, medical lectures attended, practical studies with Boston physicians touring hospitals and visiting patients, and his father's (George C. Shattuck Sr.) activities. Entries of 26 Sep.-7 Oct. 1835 describe a trip to Niagara Falls and Montreal (Quebec). There is a break from 7 Apr. 1836 to 22 July 1840, when Mrs. G.C. Shattuck (Anne H. Brune) begins writing intermittent entries with her husband. Her entries describe family, friends, and social activities. The last entry is for 29 Mar. 1842.

Shattuck (Harvard, M.D. 1835) was professor of clinical medicine at Harvard Medical School from 1855 until 1874, served as dean of the Medical School, and succeeded Oliver Wendell Holmes as visiting physician to the Massachusetts General Hospital in 1849. After graduation from medical school, he went to Paris with his friends H. I. Bowditch, A. Stillé, and Metcalfe to study with Louis.
