George B. Ward Papers, 1859-1974, bulk 1908-1940.

The bulk of the George B. Ward Papers document Ward's tenure as president of the Birmingham City Commission, 1913-1917. The Papers also contain material relating to Ward's bitterly fought reelection campaign against Dr. N.A. Barrett in 1917. Of special interest also are the 24 volumes of scrapbooks consisting of newspaper articles compiled by Ward which relate to Birmingham history, government, and politics. Finally, there is a small body of correspondence from Margaret Mitchell, the author of GONE WITH THE WIND, dated 1939 in which she thanks Ward for sending her the 1883 testimony of his mother, Margaret Ketcham Ward, before the U.S. Senate Committee Upon the Relations Between Labor and Capital. Mrs. Ward's testimony, which was taken in Birmingham, detailed Southern life before, during, and after the Civil War.
