Phi Beta Kappa was founded by students of the College of William and Mary in 1776. In 1779, charters were voted for Harvard and Yale. Begun as a literary and social fraternity, it became an honorary society in the nineteenth century. National meetings were held at the College of William and Mary in 1907, 1926, 1946, and 1976.
