The collection consists of letters written and received by Charles Atwood Kofoid. The bulk of the collection consists of letters dated 1905-1917 and mainly letters written by Kofoid to William Emerson Ritter regarding the affairs of the Marine Biological Station at La Jolla. There are a number of letters written by Kofoid to Ritter in 1908-1909 when Kofoid spent his sabbatical year touring marine biological stations in England, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Greece, Monaco and Italy. Letters from Kofoid to Ritter in 1911 discuss negotiations for the transfer of the Marine Biological Station from the control of the San Diego Marine Biological Association to the University of California. A letter from Kofoid to Ritter dated September 27, 1916 includes a proposal and discussion for cooperation between the Scripps Institution for Biological Research and the University of California Department of Zoology in Berkeley. The papers also include some minutes of meetings. Minutes dated April 12, 1917 document a meeting of the Committee on Animal Food Supply. Minutes dated April-June, 1917 document early meetings of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Pacific Division, Committee on Zoological Investigations. Correspondence dated 1921-1940 consists mainly of letters by Kofoid to Thomas Wayland Vaughan, Ritter's successor as Director of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. In his letter to Vaughan dated October 21, 1940, Kofoid enclosed an account of a meeting between E.W. Scripps and William Emerson Ritter in the summer of 1902. This was the decisive meeting which led to the establishment of the Marine Biological Station in La Jolla. The papers also include such routine matters as a discussion of personnel, buildings, supplies, budget and organization of the Station from 1902-1940.
