William D. Jones and his son Kyle Jones were ranchers and bankers in Bynum and Dupuyer, Montana. Papers (1887-1958) include general correspondence, a diary (1912), financial records, legal documents, and miscellany of Kyle and William Jones and other family members. (SC 1240) Collection consists of correspondence (1911-1958) predominantly of Kyle Jones, but also including letters of other family members; a diary (1912) of Kyle Jones while in college at Montana State College and during World War I; miscellaneous financial records predominantly of William D. Jones; legal documents (1893-1933) of W. D. Jones, consisting of homestead documents, deeds, etc.; and miscellany, including genealogical data, clippings, writings, etc.

William D. Jones was born in Grandview, Missouri, on July 20, 1857, the son of John Reid Jones and Mary Ann (Williams) Jones. He came to Montana sometime in 1877 and worked as a cowboy near Cascade for four years. He then squatted on some land near Dupuyer and began running sheep. He gradually built up his herd and acquired homestead land. He also served a clerk for a sheep ranch, was a founder of the First State Bank of Bynum, and a farmer.
