Chiefly compositions written by Reverend Mangum while a student at South Lowell Academy in Durham County, N.C. and as a Methodist ministerial student at Randolph-Macon College in Boydton, Va. Moral and political issures were frequent topics; some essays concern women's education. Includes Mangum's addresses to Randolph-Macon's Franklin Literary Society, of which he was a member; poetry manuscripts; a eulogy on the death of Henry Clay; and a transcript of Mangum's testimony to the visiting committee of the Board of Trustees of the University of North Carolina regarding controversy over the teaching of history after the school's reopening in 1870. Collection also contains a small amount of genealogical information and a few photographs of Mangum, members of the Mangum family, and Mangum family houses.
