[Letters], 1945-1955.

The collection consists of copies of correspondence sent between 1945 and 1955 by Caroline Dunn, librarian of the William Henry Smith Memorial Library; Louella D. Everett, associate editor of Bartlett's Familiar Quotations; Frederick W. Bales, Day editor, The Journal Review of Crawfordsville, Indiana; the editor of The Indianapolis News; William Randel, University of Minnesota; Nellie M. Coats, cataloger, Indiana State Library; and Wayne Guthrie of The Indianapolis News. The letters deal with the authorship of the poem "Sassafras," which appeared over the name of James B. Elmore, which Mr. Elmore refuted. Newsmen and local residents believed that Jesse A. Greene, editor of the Crawfordsville Journal, wrote and published the poem as a joke on Mr. Elmore.
