Hansell collection, 1929-1988.

A collection of materials from the beginning of Hansell's military career in 1933 through his retirement years and up to his death in 1988. A large portion of the items pertain to his role as an instructor and lecturer at the Air Corps Tactical School at Maxwell Field, Alabama during the 1930's. There are also personal notebooks which include letters, photographs, and clippings describing highlights of Hansell's career. The collection also includes a preliminary manuscript entitled "American Air Power in World War II." Addendums to the collection added several other manuscripts, including Hansell's unedited "Air Plan that Defeated Hitler," letters to and from many individuals involved with the formulation of airpower doctrine and strategy during World War II, and various articles and book reviews.

Haywood Hansell joined the Army in 1928 to learn how to fly. He quickly became a stunt pilot and barnstormed with the Air Corps Aerobatic team called "The Men on the Flying Trapeze." After the United States entered World War II, he was sent to England and worked with the staff of Dwight D. Eisenhower.
