Shelby Foote was a novelist and historian, who was born in Greenville, Miss., in 1916; attended the University of North Carolina, 1935-1937; served in the Mississippi National Guard and then as field artillery captain in Northern Ireland, 1940-1944; and worked for the Associated Press, 1944-1945.
