Taffinder was born on March 18, 1884, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1906, attained the rank of Vice Admiral, retired from the Navy in 1947, and died in 1965. Dr. Shelton H. Short III was born in Chase City, Virginia. He graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 1948 and later received his doctorate from the University of Virginia. He has published internationally and for a time taught at the Univeristy of Edinburgh in Scotland. In 1972, Dr. Short was chosen as the Patrick Henry Scholar-in-Residence at Hampden-Sydney.
