This collection relates to General Knerr's military career from 1904-1949. The most significant parts of the material deal with Knerr's role as Commanding General for Air Technical Services Command, which was to become the Materiel and Logistics Command for the Army Air Corps (1943-1946). The remainder contains materials and correspondence which relate to his formulation of the Logistics Command and his development of the Air Force Inspector General's Office (1948-1949).

Hugh Johnston Knerr (b. 1887, Fairfield, Iowa-d. Oct. 26, 1971), Major General in the U.S. Air Force, graduated from the Naval Academy in 1908, transferred to the Army in 1911, and attended aviation school in 1917. During the 1920s he advocated the development of advanced aircraft for use during warfare.
