These records (1912-2003) of the Secretary of State's office consist of ten subgroups: the Jim Waltermire Administration, the Mike Cooney Administration, the Bob Brown Administartion, the Chief Deputy's office, the Ethics Advisory Committee, Chief Legal Counsel, Management Correspondence, Executive Work Files, Montana Youth Vote Program, and Legislative Files. These records (1912-2003) of the Secretary of State's office consist of ten subgroups: the Jim Waltermire Administration, the Mike Cooney Administration, the Bob Brown Administration, the Chief Deputy's office, the Ethics Advisory Committee, Chief Legal Counsel, Management Correspondence, Executive Work Files, Montana Youth Vote Program, and Legislative Files. The Jim Waltermire Administration subgroup (1912-1988) consists of legal files, subject files, minutes of the Board of Land Commissioners, subjects files, and the Election Bureau, including published copies of official election returns (1912-1976). The Mike Cooney Administration subgroup (1988-2000) consists of correspondence, reports, speeches, subject files, miscellany, minutes of the Board of Examiners and the Board of Land Commissioners. The Bob Brown Administration subgroup (2002-2003) consists of correspondence and subject files. The Chief Deputy's office subgroup (1889-2000) consists of correspondence of Doug Mitchell and Angela Fultz, minutes, reports, speeches, subject files, and miscellany. The Ethics Advisory Committee subgroup (1993-1994) includes minutes, bill drafts, etc. The Chief Legal Counsel subgroup (1995-1997) consists of correspondence of Garth Jacobson and Steven Bullock. The Management Correspondence subgroup (1991-1997) consists of files for various office staff, arranged by their computer file numbers. The Executive Work Files subgroup (1982-1995) consist of subject files. The Montana Youth Vote Program subgroup (1992-1994) consists of subject files. The Legislative Files subgroup (1997-1999) consists of Secretary of State's Office files on topics of interest in the Legislature. (B1:2-7; 10:13-2; B1:8-7)

The Montana Territorial Secretary, authorized by the Organic Act of The Territory of Montana, was a presidential appointee whose duties included the transmittal of federal reports, and serving as Territorial Governor in the latters absence.
