This tape is a compilation of "brainwave projects" conducted by artist Nina Sobell between 1973 and 1983. In collaboration with neuropsychologists at Veterans Administration Hospital in Sepulveda, Calif., Sobell translates into a live video image the electroencephalogram (EEG) readings from two subjects as they attempt to wordlessly communicate with each other. The EEG readings are superimposed on a live video image of the participants as they observe the process on a closed-circuit monitor, resulting in composite "brainwave drawings." Sobell writes, "With my brainwave projects, ultimately, I am a cartographer, gathering data, recording it and rendering it accessible to the audience in a visual form. It is a voyage through the mind" (artist's website, http://ninasobell.com, viewed Aug. 11, 2008).
