J.P. Breda family papers, 1776-1921 (bulk 1840-1895).

Collection is comprised of letters, personal papers, business records (1840-1879) of Dr. Jean Philippe Breda concerning his medical practice, Louisiana politics, and family matters. Also included are Civil War and other papers of his son, J. Ernest Breda, lawyer, judge, district attorney and member of the Republican Party; and a few personal papers of Dr. A. Philippe Breda. Papers contain material pertaining to the Civil War in Texas, Reconstruction matters in Northwest Louisiana; and correspondence and local records of the Republican Party relating to its participation in state and local politics. Some selected papers consist of correspondence (1864-1865) of Dr. Jean P. Breda with Henry W. Allen, Louisiana governor, and his executive staff; letters of J. Ernest Breda pertaining to the Republican Party (1867); criminal court cases in Natchitoches and Grant Parishes (1872-1879); and remarks concerning Eugene Lecompte (1894). Manuscript volumes include minutes of the executive committee of the Republican Party, Natchitoches Parish, La. (1876, 1883-1884), notebooks of A. P. Breda and J. Ernest Breda (1855-1857, 1866); lecture notebook (n.d.); record book (1868-1877); record book of the stock holders of the U. B. Mfg. Co. (1890); daybooks (1868-1870); ledgers 1868-1870); and account books. Among the printed items are WHITE LEAGUE IN LOUISIANA and a broadside of the Order of the White Camelia.

Henry Watkins Allen, a lawyer in Mississippi, married Salome Crane (d. 1851) in 1842. He was elected to the Mississippi State Legislature in 1845. He moved to Louisiana in 1852, worked as a planter on Allendale Plantation, and was elected to the Louisiana State Legislature in 1854. Allen served in the Civil War as a lieutenant-colonel in the Delta Rifles of the 4th Louisiana Regiment.
