George Norwood papers, 1797-1901.

Papers of George and Stella Norwood and related families. The collection consists chiefly of deeds and land grants in East Feliciana Parish, La., and Franklin County, Miss. The earliest document is a land claim and property map (1797). Papers also include correspondence, affidavits, and other legal documents, some relating to the administering of the estate of Daniel Galbreath, John Higdon and Archibald Currie. Included are the papers of Thomas W. Scott, judge of East Feliciana Parish, that pertain to the settlement of the estates of James Winter, William J. Boatner, James H. Cason and G.W. Jelks, 1828-1863. Cotton trade records from Clinton to Port Hudson list marks, numbers, owners, consignees and total number of bales, 1845-1846. Correspondence includes letters from John I. Blair, Blairstown, N.J., concerning payments on a note of George Norwood, and family letters, 1886-1901.

George Norwood, a planter and miller of East Feliciana Parish, was born in 1847, son of Lemuel Hodge and Eliza J. (Winter) Norwood. He resided near Clinton La. and served on the police jury of the seventh ward of East Feliciana Parish for many years. He married Stella Currie, daughter of Malcolm M.
