A series of letters, mostly written to Samuel, Lord Masham by Elizabeth Chudleigh, Countess of Bristol, regarding her trials for bigamy following the death of her second husband, the Duke of Kingston. There are several letters -- either drafts or copies -- of letters sent by Masham to the Countess, as well as one 1774 letter from Edward Wortley Montagu, a cousin of her late husband. The majority of letters, sent during 1775-1776, are concerned with gathering support and statements in favor of the Countess' defense, and document her close friendship with Lord Masham.

Elizabeth Chudleigh (c.1720-1788), courtier and bigamist, was the younger daughter and youngest child of Colonel Thomas Chudleigh (c.1688-1726), lieutenant-governor of Chelsea Hospital, and Henrietta Chudleigh (d. 1756) of Chalmington, Dorset. Her grandmother had been the author Mary Chudleigh. On August 4, 1744, Elizabeth secretly married Lieutenant the Hon. Augustus John Hervey RN (1724-1779).
