Correspondence, a diary, financial papers, and plantation records document the personal and professional life of Richard Butler, an Army officer and sugar planter at Ormond Plantation. Papers pertain to plantation administration, sugar sales, household administration, the 1798 journey and the settlement of the Richard Butler Estate. The collection includes two letters from Andrew Jackson to Richard Butler and an appointment to the administrative council of Charity Hospital, signed by William C. C. Claiborne (1811).

Richard Butler, born in 1777, was the son of the American Revolutionary War figure Colonel William Butler and Jane Carmichael of New Orleans. He served in General Anthony Wayne's Army and the Second Infantry. In 1798, he traveled down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Natchez, Mississippi to deliver dispatches to Captain Guion. He recorded the journey in a travel diary.
