Jonathan Evans Rhoads was born on May 9, 1907 in a Philadelphia Quaker family that had a traditional interest in medicine. His father, Edward G. Rhoads, and his granduncle James were both physicians. Edward graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1885 and became chief resident at the Pennsylvania Hospital after serving internship first at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital.
