The Carbondale, Illinois Preservation Commission Oral History Project consists of interviews conducted by Dede Lingle Ittner. She interviewed individuals with ties to the Carbondale, Illinois community. The project began in 2004. Topics discussed in the interviews include: life in Carbondale, businesses, buildings, schools, Southern Illinois Normal University (later Southern Illinois University Carbondale), the Great Depression, World War II, and natural disasters. The interviews follow a standard set of questions. The collection consists of tapes, transcripts, newspaper clippings, and copies of photographs.

The Carbondale Preservation Commission was created in 1989 by former mayor Neil Dillard. The purpose and goal of the commission is to retrieve oral histories from people who have lived in the city for the majority of their lives and promote the identificiation and preservation of historic bulidings.
