From its founding to 1954 the Archives was headquartered at the Detroit Institute of Arts. In 1960 the Archives moved its headquarters to New York but a branch office remained in Detroit. In 1956 the Indiana Historical Bureau conducted a survey of houses built in Indiana prior to 1860. Wilbur D. Peat was asked to use the survey results as a basis for a book on Indiana architecture. At the time he was director of the John Herron Art Institute in Indianapolis and had published other works concerning art and architecture in Indiana. Wilbur D.
