General and family correspondence, mainly 1900-1948, and writings of Godbey of Missouri, Methodist minister, Methodist historian, and teacher and scholar in the field of Old Testament, Hebrew history, archeology, and Semitics, professor at Duke University, 1926-1932. Volumes include writings, notebooks, scrapbooks; also financial records of Central Methodist College at Fayette, Mo., 1900-1909. Materials earlier than 1900 (7 vols. and a few papers of scattered dates) pertain to the Rev. William Clinton Godbey, other Methodist preachers, and Methodism in 19th-century Missouri, including a preacher's diary and record, 1871-1872, on the St. Louis circuit.

Dr. Allen Godbey was born November 21, 1864 in Cooper County, Missouri. He received an A. M. degree in 1883 from Morrisville College and his Ph.D. from Chicago University in 1905. Dr. Godbey came to Duke University in the fall of 1926 as a scholar and teacher of Old Testament history in the School of Religion.
