Dwight Bentel discusses his early schooling, his first job as a journalist on the Mercury news and how that job led to being hired at San Jose State College to be in charged of the school newspaper and as a journalism instructor. He also discusses the growth of the journalism department and his appointment as secretary of the California State College committe on Student Unions as well as his committe work on getting the San Jose State student union built.

Born in Eureka, California, H. Brett Melendy (1924-2008) spent most of his life in California and Hawaii. He received his Master of Arts in Education in 1948 and his Doctorate in History in 1952 from Stanford University. During this time, he also taught high school in Fresno, California.
