The Society of Social Friends was established in 1783 as one of the first student organizations at Dartmouth College. The society maintained a student-funded and -managed library, circulating holdings to its members only. Biweekly meetings were a forum for debates, orations, disputations, and other literary exercises, focusing on current events as well as philosophical topics.
