The celebration of the 150th anniversary of the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in the Dartmouth College Case was held on April 9, 1969, in the Court of Claims, Washington, D.C.; the celebration also commemorated the career of Daniel Webster, the advocate who defended the case before the Supreme Court. The Society of Social Friends was established in 1783 as one of the first student organizations at Dartmouth College. The society maintained a student-funded and -managed library, circulating holdings to its members only. Biweekly meetings were a forum for debates, orations, disputations, and other literary exercises, focusing on current events as well as philosophical topics.
