Edmund DeBerry Covington was the son of Benjamin Hamilton and Jane Wall Covington, born 25 September 1823 in Rockingham, N.C. He attended the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and graduated in 1844. He died of pneumonia on 25 December 1845. The University of North Carolina was chartered by the state's General Assembly in 1789. Its first student was admitted in 1795.
