Josephine Nicholls Pugh record book, circa 1846-1939 (bulk 1846-1868).

The record book consists of one manuscript volume and seventeen loose items. A microfilm copy of most items in the collection is also present. Loose items consist of newspaper clippings and short notations. The manuscript volume combines handwritten entries with scrapbook items glued onto the pages. It presents evidence of public recognition of the Nicholls and Pugh families and includes some published reports of Louisiana-related events from the Mexican War through the Civil War. Included are poems, genealogical narratives and a Pugh family history, excerpts from public documents, and clippings (most undated) from Louisiana newspapers.

Josephine Nicholls was the daughter of Thomas Clark Nicholls (ca. 1790-1847), of Donaldsonville, Louisiana. In 1844 she married William Whitmell Pugh (1811-1906), a sugarcane planter of Assumption Parish, Louisiana, and owner of Woodlawn Plantation on Bayou Lafourche.
