West was born in Jamaica Plain, Mass. in 1898. He attended Pennsylvania State College before serving in the United States army, 1918-1919. He received his A.B. degree from Dartmouth College in 1922 and his A.M. degree from Dartmouth College in 1924, after working as an Instructor of English at the college. Richmond author James Branch Cabell (1879-1958) is best known for his controversial book, Jurgen (1919), a fantasy set in Cabell's mythical medieval world of Poictesme (pronounced Pwa-tem). The New York Society for the Suppression of Vice contended the book was obscene. A trial over its content brought the reclusive writer national fame.
