Correspondence and business papers, largely from the office of Emmons Raymond, president of the railroad in the 1870s. Letters relate to the purchase of land, rolling stock, and other supplies, claims for injuries, insurance matters, requests for passes, personnel matters, and relationships with other railroad companies, especially the Massawippi Valley Railway, which extended the line to Lennoxville in the Province of Quebec, Canada, in 1870, and the South Eastern Railroad of Canada, which, with the Connecticut and Passumpsic Rivers Railroad and the Boston, Concord & and Montreal, made up the so-called Montreal and Boston Air Line. Business papers include bills of agreement for use of patents and extension of the road, detailed accounts from superintendents and passenger agents, reports of directors' meetings, engineering surveys and estimates, accounting data, freight agreements, business affairs of the Memphremagog House in Newport, VT., which was owned by the railroad, and other miscellaneous material such as engineers' notebooks, bridge drawings, graphs, lists of abutting land ownes, and lists of stockholders (1845).
