Material includes a list of the participants in the conference, a program for the conference, a typescript of the proceedings entitled Discussion of need for Polar research center(s) in the United States, notes taken during the discussion by Evelyn Stefansson, a typescript of Mrs. Stefansson's report on the conference entitled Summary of the Dartmouth Polar Conference held at Hanover, New Hampshire, December 18-19, 1958, and a copy of the final report entitled Summary report of the Dartmouth Conference on Organization of Polar Research in the United States, December 18-19, 1958.

Evelyn Stefansson Nef, also known as Evelyn Baird, (b. Evelyn Schwartz, July 24, 1913, New York City-d. December 10, 2009, Washington, D.C.), puppeteer, author, Arctic explorer, researcher, librarian, philanthropist, and psychotherapist, was the wife of fellow Arctic explorer Vilhjalmur Stefansson.
