Collection consists of the records of the Thayer School of Engineering. Includes correspondence, dated 1867-1871, among Sylvanus Thayer, Asa Dodge Smith, D. H. Mahan, Robert Fletcher, Elihu Thayer Quimby, and others regarding the inception and organization of the school. Includes correspondence, reports, and other papers regarding many of the school's concerns, such as Thayer's original intentions and expectations for the school; the inadequacy of its funds, facilities, and equipment during its early years; the role of Dartmouth College in its finances and administration; the undergraduate engineering sciences department at Dartmouth College; the Tuck-Thayer program; and the induction of students into the Civil Engineer Corps of the U.S. Navy and other branches of the service during World War II. Some of the material was generated by the Thayer School of Engineering Board of Overseers and directed to the president and the trustees of Dartmouth College. Also includes papers of Robert Fletcher and William Phelps Kimball, volumes 1-11 of the West Point-Thayer Papers, 1808-1872 (West Point, N.Y. : Association of Graduates, 1965), faculty meeting reports, curriculum studies reports, student records, and general correspondence.

Asa D. Smith was the seventh president of Dartmouth College; he was in office from 1863 to 1877. He was born in Amherst, N.H. in 1804. He was graduated from Dartmouth College in 1830 and from the Andover Theological Seminary in 1834. In 1849 he received his DD from Williams College, and in 1864 he received his LL D from the University of New York. He died in Hanover, N.H. in 1877. From the description of Papers, 1865-1876. William Jewett Tucker was the ninth president of Dartmouth College; he served in that capacity from 1893 to 1909. He was born in Griswold, Conn. in 1839.
