Records, 1851-1940 (bulk 1870-1895).

Collection consists of the records of the Chandler Scientific Department at Dartmouth College and the personal and professional papers of Abiel Chandler. The records include student theses and sketchbooks for mechanical drawing and free drawing classes, treasurer's reports, accounts, some correspondence of the Chandler Scientific Department Board of Visitors, the trustees and the president of Dartmouth College. There are also merit rolls, grade books for the classes of 1862-1896 (with gaps), records of faculty meetings for 1865-1868 and 1877-1893, and reports and correspondence regarding the dissolution of the Chandler School.

Nathan Lord was the sixth president of Dartmouth College; he was in office from 1828 to 1863. He was born in Berwick, Maine in 1792, and was graduated from Bowdoin College in 1809. In 1815 he was graduated from Andover Theological Seminary. He received his DD from Bowdoin in 1828 and his LL. D. from Bowdoin in 1864. He was a trustee of Dartmouth College from 1821 to 1863. Abiel Chandler was born in Concord, New Hampshire, and educated at Fryeburg Academy, Phillips Academy, and Harvard College. After a decade of teaching, he became a commission merchant in Boston as a partner in the firm of Chandler, Howard & Company. He retired to Walpole, New Hampshire, in 1845 and died in 1851.
