Draft of an essay on the quality of life of the poor in the United States. Written on the verso of a typescript copy of a letter of Thomas Babington Macaulay to H.E. Randall, May 23, 1857, comparing the economic conditions in Great Britain and the United States. The draft essay is apparently a reaction to reading the letter.

Thomas Babington Macaulay, born in 1800 in Leicestershire, England, was an historian and author. He was educated at Cambridge. After the success of an essay on Milton in the Edinburgh Review in 1925, he contributed regularly to that journal. He was called to the bar in 1826 and elected to Parliament in 1830.
