The Society of the Alumni of Louisiana State University has existed since at least 1884. It was incorporated under the leadership of Lewis S. Graham on June 19, 1905, to maintain contact among graduates and former students, award student scholarships, and support the university financially. Huey Long Pierce, Louisiana governor and United States senator, was born 30 August 1893, near Winnfield, Winn Parish, Louisiana, and died 10 September 1935. He studied law and practiced in Winnfield after 1915; served as Louisiana public service commissioner (1921-1926); was elected governor of Louisiana (1928); was elected to the United States Senate (1930); and organized the Share-Our-Wealth Society (1934) for which he had national support.
